STATUE OF LA FLESCHE PICOTTE, FIRST NATIVE DOCTOR, TO FIND HOME ON CENTENNIAL MALL

LINCOLN- The first credentialed Native doctor in the U.S., Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte will have a permanent home through a bronze statue on Centennial Mall. Picotte was born on the Omaha Reservation in northeast Nebraska in 1865 before passing in 1915. She was the first Native person to earn a medical degree in 1889 and credited her work to seeing the unequal care provided to Native peoples. She then dedicated her life to caring for Native and non-Native residents.

Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs Executive Director Judi gaiashkibos said through honoring Picotte she can remain a role model for all people as a symbol of resiliency, Native equality and women's equality. The statue will be dedicated on October 11th, the day Nebraska celebrates Indigenous Peoples Day.
