TALLAHASSEE- Almost no one, including the sponsors of the bills that would beef up Florida's data privacy laws, have any idea who is lobbying for them to pass. Almost $300,000 in political contributions have been made to the lobbying team says Propel Florida, a nonprofit that is not required to list its donors. The only address traced to the contributions is a UPS box that was incorporated last April.
The bills being lobbied for would give consumers more access to data collected by companies and allow them to opt-out of the sale of that data. Many legislators have no idea what Propel Florid even is, but supporters of the bills are not worried about it. The majority of opposition to these bills comes from the large business groups in the area. There is little to no debate about wanting to update privacy laws but much of the issue comes from the proposed ability for consumers to sue corporations for the sale of their data.
